The Difference Between Knowing English and Using English
Share this article

There is a major difference between passive knowledge and active language ability.

Knowledge is recognition

You may recognise a word when you read or hear it without being able to use it naturally.

Usage requires practice

Speaking and writing require you to retrieve vocabulary and build sentences in real time.

Turn passive vocabulary into active vocabulary

Use new words in your own sentences. Repeat them in different situations and include them in conversations.

The more you use English, the easier it becomes to access what you already know.
